Saying that although it "would be impossible for my dear Phemy to come at a wrong time to Herne Hill," he fears that they will not reach home before June 25 to 30. Thereafter, they will be delighted to see Effie, and also Mr. Gray when he comes to London with George, en route to school in Germany. Many thanks for Mr. Gray's buying John Richardson's furniture, which John James Ruskin hopes can be "preserved to the family." He also hopes that in renting a house for £40, Mrs. John Richardson hopes to take wealthy friends as boarders and not to live like a Lady "on means furnished by me." If so, she will find herself very much mistaken. Mr. Gray's drafts of £180 and £25 will be duly honoured. If he may refer to Mr. Gray, as a friend of John Richardson's father, "appeals of various sorts" which will doubtless be made in Glasgow, he will consider it a great service. For twelve years John Richardson has been "so stupid and teazing" that he no longer trusts his own judgment. [P.S.] Although his son's health is still precarious, it has improved, and they trust that by care his life may be prolonged. Meanwhile his son worries because he "will never be fit for any arduous duties," which in turn affects his health." Rome and Naples are in many ways fearful places ..."

Euphemia Chalmers Gray, called Effie or Phemy, was born in Bowerswell House, Perth, and went to Avondale School, near Statford-on-Avon. She married the art critic John Ruskin on 10 April 1848; the marriage was annulled on 15 July 1854; she married John Everett Millais on 3 July 1855. She and Millais had eight children.
